Elizabeth Kauffman : everyday uncanny

dear diary, April 2008
graphite, watercolor/acrylic, typewritten text on paper

In the month of April in 2008, I embarked on the business of re-constructing “the mythology of everyday life.”* For each of 30 days I created a drawing to record the events and feelings of the day. To find the images to describe my days, I turned to mass media. I began tracing the female figures found on magazine pages, boiling down the information to a few simple shapes and lines. By removing all specific information the found images became templates upon which to place my ideas and feelings. The language of the public sphere is stripped down to bear structure, with all advertising removed, and it becomes a vehicle for the private voice.
